About OpenEcon

Latest U.S. inflation, unemployment, interest rates, GDP, housing and gas prices in simple charts, with plain-English explanations and an inflation calculator.

Where the data comes from

Data: Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED®), Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, which republishes public-domain series from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Census Bureau, Department of Labor, Department of the Treasury, Office of Management and Budget, Energy Information Administration, Federal Housing Finance Agency and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. These agencies, including the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, do not endorse OpenEcon. FRED® is a registered trademark of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

We include only series that FRED labels "Public Domain: Citation Requested" and that come from U.S. government agencies or the Federal Reserve. Series with third-party copyright notices, such as private home price, mortgage rate, consumer sentiment and stock index data, are left out. Every series page credits the original agency and links to the series on FRED.

How the data is updated

The site is rebuilt from periodic snapshots of FRED rather than live feeds, so a brand-new release can take a short time to appear. Each page shows the date of the latest observation and when the snapshot was taken. Agencies sometimes revise past values, and the charts show the latest revised numbers.

Not financial advice

OpenEcon explains economic data in plain English for general information. It does not give investment, tax or financial advice and does not make forecasts.
